Bed slats eliminate the need for a link spring or box spring! They provide support so that you can use a regular mattress on a full size bed rather than having to use a specific bed mattress. Place them under your mattress on the bed frame and you are ready to go. The slats are 2 3/4" wide and are spaced 2 3/4" apart from one another. The slats are attached by 1" wide straps. The slats are 54 1/8" (give or take 1/16") wide are attached to each other out to 75" in length. Be sure to measure your bed to ensure that these slats will fit before you purchase.

Getting the Best Sleep Involves Having a Decent Mattress

!±8± Getting the Best Sleep Involves Having a Decent Mattress

The Best Sleep
Most people commit around a third of their lives asleep, therefore it seems sensible to have the most pleasurable bed you really can afford. Follow our guide to help get the best choice for you.

Size matters
In a normal double bed, the actual sleeping space per person is just 2 ft 3" - about as much as a child gets in a cot. Confined bed means there is a lot more possibility of having your sleep disrupted because of your partner.

That's precisely why it's so beneficial to shop for the biggest bed within your budget and will fit in your bedroom; a king size needs to be the bare minimum (5ft).

The most suitable mattress
Picking out mattresses is generally overpowering but it's fundamental to try all sorts before deciding which is perfect for you. In the event you share a bed, it is best to go shopping together with each other but take some time! The two main styles of mattress: sprung (with interior springs for support) or non-sprung (made out of various types of foam).

Top tip
When you share your bed, you'll want to be in a position to lay next to each other along with your arms behind your head, elbows out, without coming in contact with the other person.

Within the sprung category, you'll find open coil/open sprung, continuous sprung and pocket sprung, the last of which can be typically found in top quality beds.
Non-sprung foam mattresses made out of natural latex or visco elastic (memory foam) offer greatest support and smoothly contours to your body's shape.

Top tip
If storage is an issue, opt for a divan with built-in drawers. Storage is still an option with a bedstead but use compact storage chests to keep clutter at a minimum.

Divan or bedstead?
It's down to personal preference when it comes to choosing between a divan and a bedstead. A divan can provide useful storage and extra attributes which help with comfort and support. If you can afford it, fully sprung divans are better than those with solid or platform tops since they behave like a shock absorber.

A bedstead allows you to be a bit more individual and may set the theme or style of your bedroom. Made from an array of different materials such as timber, leather and metal, the bedstead supports the mattress through a series of rigid or flexible slats. Whether you choose a divan or a bedstead, be sure your mattress is designed to go with it, and never put a new mattress on an old divan!

Top tip
For an antique bedstead, take advice from a reliable retailer about the best mattress to use with it.

The perfect bedding
The last components of a perfect bed are the pillow and bedlinen. Pillows are now made from a number of materials including feather, duck-down, goose-down, synthetic fibres and foam, but the choice is dependant on personal preference. If you use a duvet, choose the right tog for the season: for instance, a 7.5 tog for spring/summer and a 13.5 tog for autumn/winter.

There's also a wide range of non-allergenic duvets and pillows available which may help asthma and allergy sufferers. Finally, choose bedlinen made from soft, sumptuous fabrics to add colour and pattern to the room and make your bed as comfortable as possible.

Getting a good night's sleep
The Sleep Council recommends observing the four Rs for optimum sleep. Try to keep to regular times for getting up and going to bed. Get into a bedtime routine to help you wind down, for instance by having a hot drink or a bath. Keep your bedroom restful and make sure you have the right bed.

Top tip
Position your bed on the wall facing the door so that you see it straight away when you walk in the room.

Tips For Buying Platform Beds - Determining The Right Foundation For Your New Mattress

!±8± Tips For Buying Platform Beds - Determining The Right Foundation For Your New Mattress

With so many different types of mattresses available in the market place today with various warranty requirements it can make it tough to figure out what type of platform bed system will work with your new or current mattress. In this article we'll take a look at the construction of some of the most common platform beds and examine what will work your mattress, what won't and what you can do yourself to make it work so you'll meet the requirements of your mattress manufacturer. Hopefully you'll find these tips useful when it's time to purchase your new bed.

Platform beds are designed with a wide variety of foundations that are built into the bed system. The most common system is slats. These slats are typically up to 2" wide and are arranged in various spacing anywhere from 2" to 4". Slat systems are used by a large majority of manufacturers and typically these slats are joined together using a nylon material which helps to promote correct spacing of the slats and are then secured down with wood screws. The slats offer good support and help to promote air flow. The only negative is that they don't meet the requirements of mattresses like visco-elastic or memory foam mattresses which require a solid bed foundation without gaps.

If your mattress is a memory foam or visco-elastic and you really want to purchase a bed which uses a slat system you have a couple of options. If the slats are only 2-3" apart you can see about purchasing an additional set of slats or doubling up the amount of slats on the bed to help fill in the gaps. This will make the foundation more solid and will help to meet the warranty requirements for a solid foundation. Your other option would be to purchase ply board or fiberboard which doesn't need to be any thicker than ¾" of an inch, cut it to fit inside the bed and place it down over the top of the slats. This way the gaps are covered and the foundation is now solid.

There are bed companies that make beds with a solid foundation already incorporated into the bed system and these usually involve a metal frame that has ply board installed into the metal framework. Another way that is also being used are steel crossbars installed across the rails with masonite paneling secured down over the bars. These are not as common but are essentially ready to go for memory foam and visco-elastic mattresses.

If you own an innerspring mattress than most bed systems will work just fine with these mattresses. Your only concern should be the overall height of your mattress like pillow tops for example. Manufacturers of these mattresses have continued to construct them thicker and thicker over the years and you want to make sure that your mattress will not cover up the headboard. Make sure to get a measurement from the foundation of the potential bed to the top of the headboard to make sure your mattress will work with it.

Owners of futon mattresses who want to use these with platform beds should be aware that many of these futon mattresses contain cotton batting or other blends that can absorb moisture over time if proper air flow is not provided beneath the mattress. For these types of mattresses it is recommended that they be on a slat system or a foundation that will help to promote air flow beneath the futon.

In this article we've taken a look at some of the many different foundations that are available for platform beds for use with different types of mattresses. We've examined the warranty requirements for memory foam and visco-elastic mattresses and what you should look for in a foundation to help meet those requirements. Also discussed were futon mattresses and what your platform bed will need to help work with those mattresses. Tips for selecting the right platform bed based on the thickness of your mattress were also discussed to help make sure that you select the proper bed with the right headboard height to help accommodate your new or current mattress. The hope of this article was to give you some basic pointers and tips on what to look for in a bed when considering the foundation that's just right for your mattress. You're now more ready to find that perfect bed that will fit in with your own home décor and will work with your new or existing mattress the way you need it to.
